the men who opened fire this actual. roby chavez is live on u street now with more. roby. >> reporter: brian, scary moments today along u street as gun fire erupted. also scary for mourners who had filed inside this church. we were told the casket was being loaded into the church when gun fire rang out. it was the funeral of ashley mccray, she was friends with rivals of many gang members and someone brought a gun. mourners scattered as gun shots rang out in the u street corridor. friends of ashley mccray gathered at her funeral and some were known gang members. >> we was walking down it try to get in our car and realized that our car had been shot up. >> reporter: when the gun fire stopped, cars were left crashed and three people injured. 21-year-old jamal coates was killed. he was in the suv which flipped.

mourners couldn't believe it. >> i was at the church but i heard the gun shot. >> what do you make of what happened today? >> senseless, and it's something needs to be done about the balance here in the city. >> reporter: late monday, three people were taken away in handcuffs and questioned by investigators. they also towed away this car. now, detectives will try to determine if they know more about the shooting. >> this resulted from a taunting, this was a taunting at a funeral, and when we have this kind of serious consequence as a result. >> reporter: again tonight, no one has been formally charged with this crime just yet but as you saw in that late video tonight, some people were taken away and taken into custody. a car was towed away, and late tonight, we also understand several guns were also taken from that very same home. we're working with police to try to get information on what that's all about. but we should mention these two feuding gang members, these two

feuding groups from columbia heights, they are now responsible for three murders since the summer started, brian. >> roby chavez, live in northwest tonight. a large section of heavily populated u street was shut down nearly seven hours today while police investigated. the traffic meant almost no business for the normally booming area, including ben's chili bowl. residents were surprised something like this could happen to such a busy area in the middle of the day. >> it makes me more sad than angry. you know the way the situation in the community has been. it's gotten better but this shows it's another set back that shows we've got more work to do. >> u street opened around 7:30 tonight. the johns hopkins doctor shot last week is back home. the 50-year-old man shot the doctor earlier this month before killing his mother and himself. dr. cohen had to undergo surgery and spent 10 days in the

hospital recovering. animal cruelty story now, a little dog left to die in a cage in a dumpster. he was found on the streets in southwest dc. the dog is recovering at an animal shelter. karen gray houston picks up the story. >> he's a friendly dog but he's emaciated. he's about 10 pounds and heaviest and he ought to weigh 20. they've already named him thomas. >> reporter: the tiny poodle schnauzer mix is already making new friends at his new home. >> we just named him yesterday, we named him thomas. >> why thomas. >> after the maintenance man who found him. >> the dog was found behind an apartment complex on 22nd street in southeast. his cage is still next to the dumpster. it reeks of urine and feces.

>> we were cleaning around the dumpster and we heard something crying so the gentleman pulled it out and put it on the side and i called animal control. >> reporter: his hair was all matted and dirty. he's been saved and groomed since. people who are living in the apartment complex where he was found are outraged he was tossed out to die. >> how could somebody do that to the dog? >> maybe somebody couldn't pay rent for the dog because they charge rent for animals around here. >> reporter: whatever the reason, this is a crime. misdemeanor animal cruelty with a penalty of up to six months in jail and fines of up to $500. >> someone has an animal they can't care for anymore, they need to bring the animal to the shelter if they can't care for it. throwing the animal out to the trash is unacceptable. >> reporter: the humane society is desperately looking for help. they're offering a $1,000 to anyone with information leading to an arrest. in the district, karen gray houston, fox5 news. president obama getting

month. according to s&ps index, 12 cities posted worst numbers. it's expected to decline due to foreclosures and skiddish buyers and economy concerns. toys r us is expected to hire several people for the holiday season. number 3, you already know breast feeding is good for your baby. a new study claims the longer they're breast fed the longer they'll fight off infections. researchers say babies who get all their nutrition from breast milk in their first six months of life are less prone to many common infections. working moms make less than working dads. for every dollar earned by a male manager with children his female counter part earned just 79 cents and right now there's no law to close that gender gap.

thursday . we'll get you ready for it right now and do a little running around if you need to. we are not thinking this is a repeat of isabell. sometimes when people think about the possibility of a tropical storm remnants coming by, people think of that storm. that was a much more powerful storm coming by. this is more of a renegade depression and a ragity thing that's going to be coming our way. i'll show you the radar and it's probably going to track over cuba tonight. i'll show you the track in a moment. the heavy rains will be going across floored, maybe 3 to 6 or 4 to 8 inches of rain and all this tropical moisture will be working its way toward us, but not until about this time tomorrow night or maybe a little bit earlier. over to max hd, and we'll show you what's on tap for us. the showers will definitely be moving north, and they'll be moving along a stationary boundary that is to our east. most of the day we'll have some sunshine and a few clouds, temperatures in the mid-70s. those clouds will increase in

the afternoon and by tomorrow night we'll be watching for those showers, but it seems to have slowed down just a little bit. but watch what happens. the front gets dragged back to the west as the low, what we think will be maybe tropical storm nicole and eventually just a low coming on by us. that may have an effect of pulling that heavy band of rain closer to dc, maybe closer to the west, maybe farther to the east. where that heavy band of rain sets up, we're not sure yet but there's a good chance dc may be close to it. and another front comes on through, a cooler front and sweeps it out of here in time for friday. so it's thursday we have to deal with it. you can see we have clouds starting to move on in. notice at 8:00, some of the showers moving past the richmond area but you can begin to see the heavy rain that's coming out of the carolinas. we think this will have a really big impact on coastal carolina. they had 10 and 1/3 inches of rain yesterday, the second

greatest amount on record under hurricane floyd. look at thursday 8:00 in the morning. a lot of the rain will be to the west rain in dc. we lost some of our information here but it continues to show heavy rain at 5:00 and it continues to swing east. you can see it here as it comes back into focus here and friday morning at 7:00 a.m. it's pulling it all out of here and it looks like we actually redeem friday afternoon, but it's a lot of rain in a short amount of time and could definitely cause flooding problems around here. not as likely to cause wind problems. maybe winds of 35 miles per hour as it comes by. tropical depression 16, may become tropical storm nicole. a weak one though. friday we clear up, maybe a morning shower, but that's about it. the cooler weather may get you thinking about hockey. dave feldman has the ticket for you, it's a preseason ticket and he's got highlights when we return.
